The LAMP stack is Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP and used for web hosting. Installing on your local workstation for development and testing can be done from the command line.

  • Open the terminal with Control-Alt-t
  • Use the apt-get package manager commands to update your system:

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

  • Then install the LAMP stack:

    sudo apt-get install lamp-server^

    (you will need to create an admin password for MySQL during installation, be sure to write that down for later).
    Note the ^ is required at the end of the command
  • To easily manage your MySQL server from a web brower, install phpMyAdmin:

    sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin

    (you will need that MySQL admin password from the previous step)

 Additional note: these instructions are for a local development installation of LAMP and does not include instructions for hardening.  For a production installation further due diligence would be needed for security.  See this article: How to Secure Ubuntu for the Web
